A cohort of about 80,000 British adults gives a more conservative estimate. The study followed 80,306 adults (aged 30–98, no pre-existing heart disease or cancer at enrolment) over a median of about nine years, and found regular swimmers had a 28% lower risk of all-cause mortality and a 41% lower risk of cardiovascular mortality compared with non-swimmer
Another research project in Norway tracked sea swimmers over many years and observed that those who swam regularly in cold seawater had lower rates of cardiovascular disease and lived longer than non-swimmers in the same region.
Amazing new research shows swimmers beat both runners and walkers in lowest rates of mortality. Researchers from the University of South Carolina followed 40,547 men of all ages for 32 years to see how their physical activity of choice (or lack thereof) lined up against their longevity odds. Not only were regular swimmers 53% less likely to die of any cause compared to couch potatoes — they were 50% less likely to die than walkers and 49% less likely to die than runners.
While these studies do not prove cause and effect, they strongly suggest that swimming, especially in natural waters, supports longevity through multiple health pathways.
A note of caution - Low Temperature cold-water submersion can induce a high rate of cardiac arrhythmias even in healthy volunteers, because it activates two opposing reflexes at once: the cold-shock response (a sympathetically driven speeding-up of the heart) and the diving response (a parasympathetically driven slowing), and this simultaneous "tug of war" can trigger arrhythmias that, in vulnerable people.
